#5 Bunker
NOVEMBER 2009
Since the new 5th hole opened a few years back, the common consensus has been that the hole lacked definition, character, and
depth perception. After several meetings, and much discussion, the Greens Committee approved a plan to alter the back left green
side bunker.
The back left area of the green is very open and void of any significant elevation changes or objects to help define the depth. The
plan to alter the bunker simply involved raising the elevation of the rear portion of the back bunker. This would allow us to flash the
sand up and make it more visible from farther out. The key here was to make these alterations while ensuring that the changes
blended in with the surrounding terrain, most specifically the large mound behind the green. We also put a lot of effort into make
sure the new mounding flowed nicely and naturally into the existing bunker shape. The overall change helped to create some depth
and gives you a slightly more closed in feeling.
The work was simple and involved only shoring up the bunker edge, adding and grading topsoil, and re-laying sod. Although it
appears to be a minor alteration, we feel the impact will serve the approach to the green greatly.
