May 11' - Weather
One of these days, the weather will “get right”. Seriously, the cold, gloomy, and wet days have to go.
Inevitably, the days will get warm and sunny and be more seasonable. We can only hope that there is a nice
smooth transition from spring to summer.
Work on the golf course is moving right along, although at a slower pace than desired. Many days have been
lost due to the often heavy rain, as well as many days “after” the rain…..while we impatiently wait for things to
dry out. The greens, post aeration and drill and fill, have healed quite a bit, but are not quite there yet. I
believe that once we get some warm sunny days, the greens will fill in rather quickly. Fortunately, from the
feedback that I have received, playability of the greens is quite good.
Some work that had been hampered/delayed by the weather includes fairway topdressing, sodding of some
select fairway and green areas, and the final preparation and seeding of peripheral stump areas. These
things will be completed, it’s just a matter of the weather “getting right”.
Spring weed control is underway and on-going. The frequent rain and saturated conditions have complicated
that process to some degree. It is worth noting that most weeds are not controlled pre-emergently (before
they are visible) like crabgrass. Most broadleaf weeds are most effectively treated when they are actively
growing. Follow up treatments may also be necessary to control weeds that had not emerged at the time of
the initial treatment.
